USS Triton (SSRN 586) circumnavigates the world submerged. This course was followed by USS Triton on her shakedown cruise in which she circumnavigated the globe submerged. Triton left New London, CT on 16 February 1960 and submerged that afternoon off Montauk Point, Long Island. She again surfaced off the Delaware coast on the morning of 10 May after cruising approx. 40,000 miles in 84 days under the sea. Her course approximated that sailed by Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition of 1519-1521. NHHC Photographic Collection, L-File, Ships
